Galbijim in Seoul
Gangnam Myun Oak (강남면옥)
At any given moment, if you ask me what my favorite food is, I will most likely respond with a wide variety of answers depending on what I’m particularly craving at that point in time. Most of the time, however, I will without any hesitation say that Galbijim is my absolute favorite. I finally got a chance to try this galbijim restaurant in Seoul which was recommended by several grubbers and man was it delicious!
I grew up eating this stuff at my family’s restaurant – and still to this day I have memories of my step dad’s recipe being my most favorite dish of all time! Of course my palette has probably changed, and it may or may not have been the best tasting dish in the world, but eating this traditional cuisine always leaves me beaming with delight. Gangnam Myun Oak is located in Apgujeong, a little ways off the Sinsa & Apgujeong subway exits. I’ve come to find out that there are other similar (if not the same) restaurants throughout Seoul. This post will be about this particular location.
The Galbijim is a must – which comes in 3 different sizes depending on how much beef ribs you want in your belly. The portions come out with the full bones attached, which look more like beef ribs you usually get in America. The lean and fatty mixture of the ribs are very tender and the marinade is a delicious blend of sweet and salty goodness. The meal comes with other great banchan, some yooksu (soup beverage), and whatever else your heart desires. We ordered some Mandu, which were pretty hefty, and some mul naeng myun (cold noodles), both of which were excellent.
The meal doesn’t come with rice, however, you can order some bokkeumbap after you’re done with your entree. The waitress will take the stone pot away and bring it back with some sizzling rice that you can stuff yourself with if you’re still hungry. The restaurant itself is pretty large, however, depending on the time and day you decide to visit, there may be a wait to dine at this grubbery. Gangnam Myun Oak has become my favorite restaurant (so far…) that dishes out my favorite food and I can’t wait to visit again.
Low down: Galbijim, mandu, naengmyun, and some bokkeumbap to finish it off! =)
