The Best Mexican Food in Seoul (?)

Vatos Urban Tacos

Whenever people talk about Mexican food, I hope that places like El Pollo Loco, or Taco Bell don’t come to mind. I have yet to experience the best Mexican cuisines in the world, but I feel like I have had the privilege of trying some of the best tacos in the world. With this benchmark, I have become more particular about what a good taco should taste like. Vatos Urban Tacos, in Itaewon, may have the best Mexican food in Seoul. This restaurant in Seoul provides excellent quality in terms of their ingredients, taste, and presentation and serves up an array of “Tacos, Margaritas, and everything in between,”… a Seoulgrub favorite!

I like this place. The venue and ambiance is really classy, chill, and comfortable. The staff is ultra cool and super friendly. The food is pretty darn tasty and comes pretty close to the good Mexican food I crave back in Southern California. My personal favorite type of Mexican food is what I call “Dirty Mexican Food.” The flavor at Vatos isn’t what I would call “dirty,” but it does hit the spot whenever I’m craving some mouthwatering tacos. They also have a great selection of drinks and beverage concoctions – try their “Makgeolita” (spelling?)and Bloody Maria. The place can get crowded at peak times, so shoot for reservations or make a visit during their off hours.

Their menu has expanded since their initial opening back in November, and I’m curious to see what other recipes they develop. Be sure to try their each of their tacos – I especially like the carne asada and carnitas served with in-house tortillas (2 for 6,000-6,500 won, and 3 for 8,000-9,000 won), their Kimchi-Fries, and chips and delicious salsas (plural). Vatos has a brilliant blend of Korean and Mexican flavors, all wrapped and ready to be devoured. If you’re in the area and/or craving some good Mexican food – grub it up at Vatos Urban Tacos.

This is Mexican-Korean fusion- NOT Tex-Mex. There are plenty of better places, including Taco Bell. Yeah, Taco Bell.

You obviously don’t know what “Tex-Mex” is. Tex-Mex is what the US knew as Mexican food in before the recent wave of Mexican immigrants changed the dynamic of Mexican food in the US. An example, back int eh 70s and 80s, Mexican food was ground beef, sour cream, and cheddar cheese. That is “Tex-Mex”. Real Mexican food is none of that, lemony carne asada tacos with cilantro/onion and sauce is a start.

Overpriced and underwhelming. I’m finding myself disappointed as I read the back reviews.
